Cambodia Celebrates 25th Anniversary of the Ottawa Convention

Siem Reap – On March 1st, the international community marks the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa Convention, a pivotal treaty aimed at eliminating the threat of anti-personnel mines worldwide. Since its inception, the convention has symbolized the collective ambition to create a safer environment, free from the perils of landmines, fostering peace and humanitarian advancement.

This anniversary not only commemorates the treaty's entry into force but also celebrates the relentless efforts of nations, organizations, and individuals dedicated to mine eradication. Their unwavering commitment over the past quarter-century has significantly contributed to reducing the dangers posed by landmines, despite the immense challenges encountered.

The Ottawa Convention, which Cambodia ratified in 2000, has played a crucial role in the country's ongoing endeavors to eliminate landmines. Cambodia's significant progress in this area has been acknowledged as a vital contribution to the global campaign against landmines.

2024 is particularly significant as it marks the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa Convention. In recognition of its efforts, Cambodia has been elected by the 164 States Parties of the Convention as President and Host of the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World. This summit aims to adopt the 5-Year Siem Reap-Angkor Action Plan and the Siem Reap-Angkor Declaration, reinforcing the global commitment to a mine-free future.

As we observe this milestone, it is an opportunity to honor the resilience and dedication of all those who have tirelessly worked towards this noble cause. It also serves as a moment to reassert our global pledge to continue the fight against landmines, ensuring a safer world for future generations.

The Prime Minister's leadership and commitment to a mine-free world have been instrumental in driving forward this cause. As we gather to celebrate this anniversary, let us renew our commitment to the Ottawa Convention's ideals, striving to heal past wounds and build a future shaped by hope and human dignity.
